ABSTRACT

The similarities between Canada and the United States and their citizens are extensive. Because of their relatively close proximity to each other and the similarity of their histories, the cultures of these two countries are remarkably parallel. Indeed, 'there are few distinguishing characteristics between the individuals living on either side of the imaginary boundary separating our two nations' [McCready, 1972: 17]. This cultural similarity extends to many of the social institutions existing in these countries. For instance, the retail environments present in these two countries have also been strikingly similar.
