ABSTRACT

Much of the debate, and moreover academic research, on out-ofcentre shopping development has centred upon mega-scale developments of 1 million sq. ft. plus [Davies and Howard, 1987; Shaw, 1987]. Yet, as Hillier Parker [1988a, 1988b] have demonstrated, the bulk of latter-day development comprises planned and unplanned retail parks, loose agglomerations of retail warehouses - and occasionally superstores - with shared car parking facilities. Indeed, they accounted for 50 per cent of the total out-of-town retailing floorspace in 1986, 77 per cent in 1987 and an estimated 79 per cent of the 7.4 million sq. ft. currently under construction. Examples include Cribbs Causeway in

Bristol, Retail World in Rotherham, the Meteor Centre, Derby and the Aireside Centre, Leeds.
