ABSTRACT
Over the past two decades, the approach to regional economic development in Western Europe has become increasingly complex. Once the preserve of national governments alone, regional policies are now operated by a wide range of institutions at regional, national and European levels through a diverse mix of instruments and addressing manifold objectives. Regionalization, policy integration, strategic planning, partnership, networking and evaluation are some of the newer trends being advocated or implemented in recent years.
