In the United States, the socio-economic changes that have occurred in the region of Western Pennsylvania, and especially within the city of Pittsburgh, are often considered one of the minor miracles of recent years. The region has undergone massive economic change, from being the centre of steel-making and other primary metals industries in the United States to having only a single full-size steel mill in operation. l Despite the massive loss of manufacturing jobs, Pittsburgh has an unemployment rate below the national average, with the majority of jobs now being in service industries such as education, health care and banking.
