ABSTRACT

At different times between July 1952 and the late 1960s, the Egyptian government initiated various measures aimed at changing development trends in Egypt's society and economy. Three areas of focus, essentially interrelated, were population growth, domestic saving and economic growth. Other areas were also given attention, but there is no doubt that the first three were considered the prime areas in which far-reaching changes affecting the economy and the general welfare of the population could be achieved. The politics and performance of the Nasser regime in these areas have already been analyzed in a number of studies.! This chapter seeks to examine these changes from a long-term perspective, with the objective of contributing to an understanding of the nature of the July revolution of 1952.
