ABSTRACT

The 'golden years' of apartheid, the years of high economic growth, massive foreign investment and industrial and political stability, were short. By the mid-1970s South Africa faced global recession, labour unrest, loss of regional and Western allies, new waves of political militancy among the black intelligentsia and youth, and internal tensions within the government. In response to these conditions the National Party attempted to restructure state institutions including sport. It failed dismally.
