ABSTRACT

W HILE BRITAIN WAS fighting the United States in the Canadas, she remained allied with Spain in her war against Napoleon; but Spain and the USA continued to regard each other as neutrals. This situation is a particularly interesting complication in terms of coalition and world war, since quite apart from the whole Louisiana purchase affair discussed in Part One, Spain and the United States were in conflict over the Floridas. In 1812, Florida consisted of two provinces, East and West, and shortly before the outbreak of the Canadian war, Madison had ordered the annexation of West Florida, since the Spanish claim to this territory had lapsed in 179 5.
