ABSTRACT
There were five parliamentary by-elections during 1997 - the 18th and last of the 1992-97 parliament at Wirral South and the first four of the new parliament. These included the very unusual re-run of the general election contest at Winchester which arose from a successful election petition by the Conservative candidate. By-elections are numbered consecutively from the preceding general election.
