ABSTRACT
Elections, including general elections, are held in the shadow of the legal rules which apply, at least some of which are designed to encourage the fairness of the contest. In the United Kingdom, in the absence of a written constitution, the legal rules have to be gathered eclectically from a mixture of sources in legislation, principally on electoral law or concerning the media.
