ABSTRACT
An analysis of custom within a state in relation to family matters involves not only a clash between differing ways of life, the one recorded in modern law, the other regulated by unwritten rules, but also, in some instances, a clash between the interests of those encompassed within the family framework – between the husband and the wife, between the parents and the children, between the members of the immediate family and those in the larger extended familial framework or clan.
