ABSTRACT

These problems addressed a notional invasion of Germany from Denmark and the possibility of an amphibious landing by a British corps somewhere along the northern coast of Germany – the only time such a scenario was addressed in Schlieffen's games.1 The involvement of the Royal Navy was assumed to have forced the German fleet into its ports. Schlief fen's subordinates were placed in the role of the Deputy Commanding General of the IX Army Corps (based in Altona). They were set the challenging task of defeating the invading forces using only the reserve troops at hand – no active duty troops could be spared to deal with what Schlieffen clearly considered a sideshow to the main battle elsewhere.
