ABSTRACT

Some of the Austro-Hungarian generals reporting to von Below after his appointment on the Italian front were good professional and energetic leaders. Among them, Rudolf Muller, Alfred Krauss and Karl Gerabek should be mentioned. Krauss, as Corps Commander, accountable to the 14th Army's right wing, bore a heavy responsibility during the entire Caporetto campaign. Fortunately, almost at once he qeveloped a good personal relationship with both von Below and Krafft. In the overall planning of the Isonzo offensive in the autumn of 1 9 1 7, the 14th Army was not operating in an empty space . To its left were two Austro-Hungarian armies under General Svetozar Boroevic and to its right was the 1 0th Austro-Hungarian Army led by Field Marshall Alexander Krobatin, who had been Minister of War with Francis Joseph, and was one of the oldest generals still in active service .2
