ABSTRACT

Between the entry of Italy into the war on 10th June 1940 and the beginning of November of that year two major changes in the political situation in the Mediterranean had taken place. By the end of June France had collapsed, and at the end of OCtober Greece was invaded by Italian forces.2 Notwithstanding this, our position at sea showed a decided improvement over that prevailing five months earlier. The Commander-in-Chief, Admiral Sir Andrew B. Cunningham, had taken the measure of the Italian Fleet, and was relieved of certain refuelling difficulties through the use of Suda Bay.
