ABSTRACT
The system of relations between Church and State in Greece is shaped by the 1975 Constitution in force as amended in 1986. In particular, there are two defining poles: Article 3 and Article 13.1
Article 13 safeguards religious freedom as an extension and complement of the right to individual freedom as the latter is provided by Article 5 par. 1 of the Greek Constitution.2 This connotes a great deal more than mere religious tolerance; the foundations of which were laid in the initial Constitutions of the revolutionary period against Turks, and which were, in 1821, of great scope and of a more positive nature.3
