ABSTRACT

The history of women's human rights in Greece is very recent. It was not until the beginning of the twentieth century that women started to emerge from the darkness and appear in the limelight of public life. The recognition of women's human and political rights, their massive participation in education and economic activities, changes in the roles of the two sexes as well as in family structures, are all factors that constitute the greatest peaceful social revolution in the age-long history of Greece. The twentieth century began with the demand by women for equal access to education, paid employment and politics, and ended with their claim for a fair and balanced gender participation in the ~emocratic institutions and political decision-making process.
