ABSTRACT

Saunders and Severn (1999) remind us of other associations for the word 'simulate': 'pretend, masquerade, make believe, make as if, make like, act, mimic, portray, represent' . Put somewhat crudely, therefore, simulation as an assessment technique strives to recreate a real situation or environment in order to test an individual's knowledge, understanding, skill or capability. Role-plays and case studies are readily identified as classic examples of simulations used within the higher educational environment.
