ABSTRACT

The University of Auckland is the largest 'traditional' university in New Zealand with approximately 26,000 on-campus students. It has specialized in face-to-face, large lecture or small group teaching across disciplines and professional fields since 1883, and takes pride in attracting the country's largest pool of research funding. The university recently joined 'Universitas 21', an international consortium of research-led institutions, and is looking to national and international markets for new teaching and research opportunities. While these global ambitions are clear, the current infrastructure does not support large-scale open, distance or flexible learning opportunities. Other New Zealand universities currently lead the field in this area.
