ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the method adopted by the Science Department at Korowa Anglican Girls' School to introduce a more effective teaching and learning process. Not only was a less abstract approach to learning needed but it was also hoped to make studying biology a more participative experience for the students by giving them opportunities to take responsibility for their own learning. At the year 9 level there is no set syllabus in the State of Victoria, nor are there public examinations, so the opportunity existed to follow a worthwhile goal. It was decided to develop a unit of work along these lines using the human body as the context. The content to be covered included the size, shape, position and overall role of the most important organs of the body, and the function of the circulatory system in linking those organs was to be the major concept.
