ABSTRACT

Why did the people of Five Bridges School think and act as they did? We began exploring this by asking them and cataloguing the factors cited. We examined their responses to see what extent the same reasons were ^iven more than once by the same person, or by several different people. We considered our evidence to be especially strong if the same 'why's' were stated by individuals representing different role groups or backgrounds. But we did not stop with what people said; based on our observations and perceptions of Five Bridges, we identified additional determinants to those named. The process that will lead to an understanding of the 'why's' is often very speculative. But, we believe our speculations are reasonable because they are based upon a procedure for triangulating or cross-checking our findings.
