As the Nazi conquest of Europe rapidly spread after September 1939, American boys, far removed from the battlefields, anxiously

awaited stories about the "excitement" of war. Hundreds of thousands of copies of World War I-focused series books featuring fearless young America heroes in the center of the fray had been circulating for more than a generation. Now German troops were on the march once again, and the certainty of even more vicarious thrills seemed assured.
