ABSTRACT

Exemplary Intergenerational Programs Melissa O. Hawkins Francis A. McGuire

The proliferation of intergenerational efforts has yielded a variety of models useful in determining program direction. There are hundreds of programs that can provide a starting point for agencies and communities seeking to find ways of bringing the young and old together. As shown in Chapter I, one way to categorize programs is based on the focus of service: young and old in service to their community; elderly serving the young; or, young providing service to older individuals. The purpose of this chapter is to describe illustrative intergenerational programs in each of these areas. This brief overview provides a starting point for individuals desirous of initiating programs such as those described.
