ABSTRACT

The goal of this article is to give guidance in searching trademarks and owner names by using sample queries in the trademark databases of the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). The USPTO publishes two trademark database systems: Trademark Electronic Search System (TESS), a Web-based database updated daily, and Cassis2,1,2 a DVD product updated bimonthly. A third database called X-Search is available to trademark examining attorneys and the Detroit and Sunnyvale Patent and Trademark Depository Libraries. X-Search is not covered by this article since it is available at a limited number of sites. This article does not give detailed descriptions of database display screens and does not explain all features of the systems. The reader is encouraged to review database help screens and training materials that accompany Cassis2 and TESS.
