ABSTRACT

New Zealand lies in the Southwest Pacific, some 2,000 miles off the coast of Australia. The North Island is the smallest of New Zealand's two main islands, yet two-thirds of its 3.5 million inhabitants live there. The largest group of New Zealanders-called Pakeha by the Maoris-are of European and, particularly, of British stock. Hence the Union Jack appears in one corner of New Zealand's flag.
