ABSTRACT

For every complex problem, there is a solution that is simple, neat, and wrong.

INTRODUCTION

Human behavior is extraordinarily varied and complex. The unexpected behaviors of others often astound us, and, on occasion, we find ourselves bewildered by our own actions. We like to think of ourselves as logical and entirely in control of our lives. However, the directions we sometimes take, the people we marry (and perhaps divorce), and the dreams we follow may be dictated by strong emotional forces that do not necessarily flow from logic and may not even be entirely in our conscious awareness. As we pursue our dreams and desires, we do so within the social context of our lives, the constitutional makeup of our physical being, and the physical environment surrounding us, which also may decisively influence our destinies.
