ABSTRACT
This chapter addresses the process of self-identification, emphasizing factors, to be developed throughout the book, that are particularly salient to Chinese Americans. It is understood that the "self" is formed in the interactions between innate attributes, such as physical features, temperament, native intelligence and talents, and the external environment, a nature-nurture combination.
