ABSTRACT
According to the Justice Department’s National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS)—seen as the most comprehensive victimization survey-in 1995, 876,530 violent crime victimizations occurred in which the offender was related to the victim. The breakdown by relationship can be seen in Table 7.1. Spouses, ex-spouses, parents, and children accounted for 613,860 of the victimizations. The majority of the offenses involved assaults and attempted or threatened violence. Nearly 12 percent of the single-offender victimizations and over 2 percent of the multiple-offender victimizations were perceived as perpetrated by family members, including spouses, ex-spouses, and children (U.S. Department of Justice, 2000).
