ABSTRACT

As discussed in the previous chapters, China has experienced extensive growth in international tourism since the open door policy of 1978. Recent statistics show that the total number of overnight visitors to China in 2001 was 33.2 million, a forty-six-fold increase from 1978 (CNTA, 2002a). The total international tourism receipts in China in 2001 was US$17.8 billion, a sixty-eight-fold increase from 1978 (CNTA, 2002a). In both instances, China was fifth in world rankings (WTO, 2002).
