ABSTRACT

In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), eleuthero is used as a preventive medicine and tonic in the belief that it will increase longevity, improve general health, improve the appetite, and restore memory. Specific uses of the herb in TCM include treatments for bronchitis, chronic lung ailments, hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, impotence, low blood oxygen, stress (Chang and But, 1986), kidney and lower back pain, rheumatoid arthritis, poor appetite, and as a diuretic (Foster and Yue, 1992).
