ABSTRACT

As demonstrated in the chapters collected in this volume, China’s tourism has experienced great changes in the last two decades. China’s tourism industry has been transformed from a virtually non-economic activity before the mid-1970s to a major economic force in the national economy today. Two decades of development have yielded both positive experiences and hard lessons. As the Chinese economy continues to grow at a rapid pace, China’s tourism industry faces great opportunities and challenges for future development. This concluding chapter identifies and discusses the pressing issues confronting China’s tourism industry in the new millennium, with particular emphasis given to the impacts of the market opening measures that China will be required to adopt since its recent accession to the World Trade Organization.
