ABSTRACT

Among the Caribbean nations, Grenada ranked sixth in HIV incidence during the first decade of surveillance, 1984-1993 (Caribbean Epidemiology Centre, 1993). Its rate of 89.7 per 100,000 population exceeded that of 13 other countries but did not approach the level of the leading countries: 545.8 in the Bahamas, 421.5 in Bermuda, and 340.1 in the Turks and Caicos. By regional standards, Grenada does not seem to face a serious HIV/AIDS problem. This impression is supported by a continuous decline of positive HIV test results during the last five years, from 23 in 1995 to 11 in 1999 (Grenada Ministry of Health, 2000). However, a closer look at the age-sex distribution over time suggests the emergence of young women as a high risk group.
