ABSTRACT
Other than a mouthful to say, plausible alternative explanations are hypothetical rival explanations for your findings. They apply most directly to experimental and correlational designs. How can you respond to these rivals? In effect, you try to eliminate them by anticipating them as the study is designed. Most of them are eliminated by using a control group (which means experiments, rather than correlational studies, have the best chance of really eliminating them).
