ABSTRACT

The 1960s had begun: a time of upheaval for the nation, a time of questioning and reevaluating everything that was inherited from the past. Young Americans, raised on the belief that they were entitled to make their own decisions, rejected the values of previous generations and challenged the basic premises of the past. Social and political movements sprang up on various fronts. The African-American struggle for social justice gave birth to the civil rights movement; the women's liberation movement challenged sexism in our society; and opposition to the war in Vietnam gave rise to the antiwar movement. Protests often erupted in violence on college campuses and in the streets.
