ABSTRACT

My parents met toward the end of 1936 through an ad in the personals. I would have thought that finding a mate through newspaper advertising was a modern invention of our alienated times, but apparently it was also an option for middle-class Jews living in Poland. The story was told to me by my father, who rarely spoke about the past, at least about such personal matters, and it was confirmed rather sheepishly by my mother who was obviously embarrassed by the way she had acquired a husband.
