ABSTRACT

My father chose the title WHY? for a book describing his experiences at the Janowska concentration camp. Presumably his choice of title reflects his struggle to bring meaning to the senseless brutality he was exposed to daily during the year and four months that he was imprisoned there. The question "Why?" comes up again and again in the works of survivors. "Why did this tragedy happen to our people?" "Why did God allow this to happen?" "Why did the world not intervene?" "Why did I survive when stronger, brighter, more deserving loved ones perished?" There are no answers to these questions, but the imperative to find meaning is so strong that it will not be silenced.
