In view of the shortness of time the apostle recommends a radical Christian discipleship. His ethic is one that challenges the idolatries of the age: the family, the indulgent, narcissistic self; the greed of the social economic order. It is the kind of radical discipleship spoken of by
the great theologians and practitioners of the faith in our day. I think of Dietrich Bonhoeffer' s Cost of Discipleship and Kari Barth's reflections on the same topic, or the remarkable life of Mother Teresa.
