In 1999 my wife and I took a seven-night cruise from Los Angeles to Puerto Vallarta and back on the Song of America. After I wrote Ocean Travel and Cruising I read over the journal I kept while on the cruise. I was struck by the similarity between many of the ideas I dealt with in this book and the thoughts I had about the Puerto Vallarta cruise, and, by implication, cruising in general. What follows is a selection of short passages from the cruise journal I kept when I was on what was advertised to be the last sailing of the Song of America in January 1999. I have been keeping journals since 1954 and use them in planning and writing my books. The sociologist in me finds cruises culturally interesting. Ocean Travel and Cruising is the ultimate result of that interest.
