ABSTRACT

In Nedarim 39a, we are taught that “an individual who visits the sick removes 1/60th of their suffering or illness when they depart.” This occurs only when the individual becomes a ben or bat gil.1 The idea is to find a common life story piece and, for me as the chaplain, to have integrated it successfully so that in revisiting the experience I am not overwhelmed.2 Only then will that fraction of the suffering or illness be removed. It is a great challenge and responsibility.
