ABSTRACT

Much of the literature as well as the electronic and print media tend to malign young African-American males as troubled and view them as an “endangered species.” Society frowns on their behavior and activities as reflected in their embattled and embittered lives of violence and crime. Though many authors view them as lost and at risk, we maintain that their potential for growth and change deserves more recognition and support than is usually given (Brown, Snell, & Thomas, 1993).
