ABSTRACT

In 2000, the Reference Department at the University of Colorado at Boulder Libraries entered into a partnership with the Program for Writing and Rhetoric (PWR). PWR is a unit within the College of Arts and Sciences and is responsible for campus-wide instruction in expository writing. PWR’s mission is to train “students to think critically about the texts they read and the writing they produce and to enable them to shape and express ideas with clarity and grace in any context” (2003, p. 1). The objective of the collaboration is to integrate information literacy concepts into the PWR’s first-year writing course. The stated outcome is to teach students information literacy skills so that they can be successful in their college career. WRTG 1150 is a mandatory, introductory writing course for all College of Arts and Sciences students. Generally, students take WRTG 1150 as freshmen, and over 2,050 enrolled in the class during 2003-2004. The information literacy component of this partnership consisted of four segments:

1. WRTG 1150 students complete an online tutorial (comprised of six modules) designed to teach basic library research. Each module includes a quiz graded by the library.
