ABSTRACT

The term criterion-referenced testing was suggested by Glaser and Klaus (1962). A criterion-referenced test is one in which the scores are interpreted relative to a well-defined domain of behaviors and characteristics, rather than how well a person performs relative to how others perform. Typically, the score for an examinee is expressed as the proportion of the items the examinee has answered correctly. This is used as an estimate of the proportion of the domain of knowledge, skills, behaviors, and/or characteristics the examinee has mastered. Over the past three decades, there has been a substantial increase in testing activities related to criterionreferenced testing.
