ABSTRACT
Cognitive psychology has had major impact on our understanding of complex cognitive skills, such as problem solving, thinking, and inference. Increasingly, cognitive psychology is providing a substantive foundation for both instruction and aptitude theory (e.g., Glaser, 1985). Cognitive tasks can be characterized by the component processes, strategies, and knowledge structures involved in solving the task.
