ABSTRACT

After spending the first session in plenary and the second session as part of the subgroup entitled environment, the discussion group concerned with mathematics curriculum in early childhood education met for 1 ½ hours on each of the mornings of Day 6 and Day 7 of the Congress. The topics discussed included the notion of curriculum itself and how different it would need to be in a constructivist framework, the basic ideas of constructivism, the mathematical content suitable for early childhood, the problems involved in engaging teachers with curriculum reform, the political nature of curriculum reform, the place of a philosophy of mathematics and its teaching in curriculum reform, professional development of teachers, and ever-present concerns about assessment and evaluation.
