ABSTRACT

In any discussion of educational outcomes, attention must eventually turn to career choice and development. By career development we do not mean job training, but the aspect of general human development that encompasses work-related behavior throughout the life span (Super, 1990). This chapter provides an overview of the research linking self-perceptions of capabilities, influenced by educational experiences, to career decision making, career choice, and career development. Historically the topic of career development has been central to the field of counseling psychology and the following discussion draws heavily from the counseling tradition.
