ABSTRACT
The construct of attention has played a central role in the study of mental retardation. Practitioners and academicans alike have invoked attentional processes to explain many of the behaviors of mentally retarded persons. Several general theories of attention have guided research in the field. The following review provides a summary of several approaches to the study of attention within the framework of information processing theory, as well as a selective overview of research on attention in mentally retarded persons.
