ABSTRACT

The view that new technology is fundamentally affecting work organisations has been a rich source of controversy and comment over the last fifteen years or so. In the UK, the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) has announced a new research programme on ‘the virtual society’ whose purpose is to investigate:

the role of electronic technologies over a range of human and social activities and determine the extent to which they are fundamentally affecting the way in which people behave, organise themselves and interact with each other.
