ABSTRACT

The chapters in this volume and, indeed, the conference presentations that gave birth to the chapters, are a kind of portfolio: a coming together of widely divergent approaches to portfolio use in widely varied settings, as seen from widely disparate sites—but unified nonetheless by common threads and common visions. My role at the conference and now in this epilogue is to uncover and comment on these threads and visions and reflect on the context in which portfolios are flourishing. But just as one can never come to a conclusion about a portfolio that truly captures its richness, I can never quite capture the richness of the conference and of these chapters. Nonetheless, I drew some conclusions while listening to others, participating in discussions growing out of their work, and reflecting on what I heard and saw.
