ABSTRACT

The story line of how my thinking developed over nearly fifty years seems much less important than my current awareness of the challenges faced by educators. I do not seek to explain the pathways that led me to recognize and articulate these challenges, although a perusal of the previous chapters may provide clues to those pathways. Nor will I endeavor to convince others that I see truly. Inasmuch as I no longer gain much pleasure from reading current curriculum literature, I plead ignorance about whether these challenges are being worked on or even sensed by others. My intent is merely to bequeath five challenges to those interested in my earlier work. They are to:

Surpass the technical foundations of education.

Affirm the significance of the imagination.

Use the world’s intellectual traditions and achievements.

Engage in public discourse about education.

Speak out for children and youth.
