ABSTRACT
Further study of phonation may be prompted by a number of different motivations. One might be a wish to understand the complex associations between laryngeal structure and function, acoustic output, and auditory quality. Another is an interest in the influence of phonation in social interaction, and a brief exploration of this area may help to set the scene for this chapter.
