ABSTRACT

Gandhi is universally renowned and revered as the great teacher of ahimsa, or nonviolence. He proposed and practiced the ideals of ahimsa to resist the violence of British colonial rule, first in South Africa and later in India. Gandhi's political movement to resist violence nonviolently has inspired many peace activists and leaders of the oppressed, including Martin Luther King, Jr., Nelson Mandela, Julius Nyerere, Abdul Ghaffar Khan, and Cesar Chavez.
