ABSTRACT
Despite the heroic endeavors of Professor Louis Harlan, not all modern historians find Booker T. Washington, with his accommodationism and peasant conservatism, an attractive area of research. Seemingly implicit in this viewpoint is the value judgment that alternative, more successful, or at least less harmful, strategies could have been pursued by Washington.
